Pocket Science: What Clinicians Really Carry (and How We Designed for It)

Pocket Science: What Clinicians Really Carry (and How We Designed for It)

If you ask a healthcare professional what’s in their pockets at the start of a shift versus the end, the answer can be very different. Over the course of a busy day, pockets become essential tools of the trade, holding everything from clinical instruments to quick-reference notes.

For clinicians, pockets aren’t just a design detail. They’re part of the workflow.

After years working in healthcare environments, we realized that many scrubs are designed without fully understanding what clinicians actually carry. At OATX Scrubs, we approached pocket design differently, by starting with the realities of the job.

What Clinicians Actually Carry

Depending on the role and setting, a clinician’s pockets often hold a surprising amount of essential gear, including:

  • Pens and permanent markers

  • Trauma shears

  • Alcohol swabs

  • Small notebooks or report sheets

  • Personal phone or pager

  • Lip balm or hand lotion

  • Gloves for quick access

  • Mini flashlights or penlights

These items may seem small, but they’re used constantly throughout a shift. When pockets are poorly designed, clinicians end up juggling tools, overstuffing compartments, or wasting precious seconds searching for what they need.

Why Pocket Design Matters

Good pocket design does more than hold items. It supports efficiency.

When pockets are placed thoughtfully, clinicians can access tools quickly without interrupting patient care. The right pocket structure can also prevent items from shifting, falling out, or creating uncomfortable bulk while moving.

In fast-paced environments, small design decisions can make a big difference.

How We Designed OATX Scrubs Pockets

When developing OATX Scrubs, we focused on three priorities:

1. Functionality
Pockets are sized and placed to hold common clinical tools without sagging or pulling on the fabric.

2. Accessibility
Items should be easy to reach while standing, walking, or moving quickly between tasks.

3. Structure
Reinforced stitching and thoughtful pocket depth help prevent stretching and keep items secure throughout long shifts.

The goal is simple: your scrubs should work with you, not against you.

Designed for Real Shifts

Healthcare professionals move constantly — from patient rooms to charting stations to emergencies that require immediate action. Scrubs should support that reality with thoughtful details that make the day smoother.

At OATX Scrubs, every design decision starts with one question:

What do healthcare professionals actually need during a shift?

Pocket design may seem like a small detail, but for clinicians on the frontlines, it’s one that matters every single day. 🩺
